Chemung County Starts Foreclosure Proceedings Against First Arena

Elmira, N.Y. – The doors of First Arena may be closing if more than $130,000 dollars in late taxes and fees aren’t paid.

Chemung County has started foreclosure proceedings against First Arena.

Southern Tier Economic Development is the owner of the building, but the Afr family, who owns the Elmira Jackals, is responsible for paying taxes and fees.

The Afr’s currently owe just over $136,000; Chemung County officials said the family is three years behind on payments.

The deadline for the payments was last Tuesday.

“As of 4:30 on [January] 17th, if you wanted to stop foreclosure from happening, the taxes had to be paid. They chose to do nothing. As County Executive, I’m certainly discouraged that they didn’t uphold their responsibilities to the lease agreement,” said Tom Santulli.

A judge will now sign a foreclosure order, and the Afr’s will have until February 29th to pay the owed money.

Robbie Nichols, the General Manager for the Elmira Jackals, said the team will not be impacted as of now.

Calls to the Afr family were not immediately returned.
